We're going to be straightforward: we built VeloxaHost, so we have skin in the game. That said, this comparison is honest. DigitalOcean is a genuinely good product — it pioneered the developer-friendly VPS market. There are scenarios where it's still the better choice, and we'll tell you exactly what they are.
DigitalOcean prices are its Basic (Regular) Droplets, from its public pricing pages as of October 2026; VeloxaHost prices are the standard monthly rates. Always verify current prices before buying. For the full, regularly checked comparison, with migration steps, see VeloxaHost vs DigitalOcean.
Pricing Comparison
| Plan | VeloxaHost | DigitalOcean Droplet |
|---|---|---|
| 1 vCPU / 1 GB RAM | $4/mo | $6/mo |
| 1 vCPU / 2 GB RAM | $8/mo | $12/mo |
| 4 vCPU / 8 GB RAM | $30/mo | $48/mo |
| 8 vCPU / 16 GB RAM | $60/mo | $96/mo |
| Bandwidth included | Not metered or billed | 1–6 TB/mo (varies) |
| Snapshots | Included, up to a per-size limit | $0.06/GiB/mo |
| Floating IPs | Not available in veloxa-us-east-1 yet (dedicated IPv4: $2/mo) | Reserved IPs: free while assigned, $5/mo unassigned |
| Private networking | Not available in veloxa-us-east-1 yet | Included (VPC) |
At 8 vCPU / 16 GB RAM, VeloxaHost is ~38% cheaper ($60 vs $96), the same margin as at 4 vCPU / 8 GB, and a third cheaper at the two smallest sizes. The snapshot pricing difference is significant if you're taking frequent backups.
Virtualization Technology
VeloxaHost runs system containers. Full virtual machines are planned but not available in our live region, veloxa-us-east-1, yet. System containers start in 1–2 seconds, share the host kernel, support instant snapshots, and run Docker inside.
DigitalOcean uses KVM virtual machines (Droplets). This gives stronger isolation per workload but slower boot times (30–60 seconds) and no sub-second snapshot capability.
| Property | VeloxaHost | DigitalOcean |
|---|---|---|
| Default instance type | System container | KVM VM (Droplet) |
| Startup time | Under 3 seconds (containers) | ~45 seconds |
| Snapshot speed | Instant | Minutes |
| Live migration | ❌ No | ❌ No |
| Kernel isolation | Shared kernel (container) | Separate kernel (VM) |
| VMs available | 🔜 Planned (not in veloxa-us-east-1 yet) | ✅ (Droplets) |
Networking
VeloxaHost reaches each server through a block of ports on the region's shared IPv4 address, with an optional dedicated IPv4 address ($2/month) and network-level firewalls, managed through the same API and console. Servers are port-isolated from each other. Private networks, floating IPs and load balancers are planned but not available in veloxa-us-east-1 yet.
DigitalOcean has VPC (private networking), floating IPs (called Reserved IPs), and a managed load balancer (from $12/mo per node).

| Managed Databases | Not offered (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis and more as one-click apps) | ✅ (Postgres, MySQL, Redis, Mongo) |
| Managed Kubernetes | Roadmap | ✅ DOKS |
| Object Storage | ✅ S3-compatible | ✅ Spaces |
| Load Balancer | 🔜 Not in veloxa-us-east-1 yet | ✅ From $12/mo per node |

| Firewall | ✅ Network-level | ✅ Cloud Firewalls |
When DigitalOcean Is Still the Better Choice
Be honest about this:
- Managed Databases — DO's managed Postgres/MySQL/Redis is excellent. If you rely on managed DBs, DO wins (on VeloxaHost you run the database yourself, from a one-click app)
- Managed Kubernetes (DOKS) — DO has a mature, affordable managed K8s offering. VeloxaHost is still building this
- App Platform — If you want Heroku-style PaaS that builds containers from buildpacks or a Dockerfile, DigitalOcean's App Platform does this well. VeloxaHost's managed hosting deploys PHP, Node, Python and static sites from Git (from $6.99/mo), but does not build container images
- Ecosystem maturity — DO has been around since 2012. More tutorials, more community Q&A, more third-party integrations reference it
- Non-US regions — DO runs 16 datacenters in 13 cities. VeloxaHost runs one region, US East (Washington, DC area)
When VeloxaHost Is the Better Choice
- Cost — 33–38% cheaper at the sizes above, no snapshot fees, bandwidth not metered or billed
- Fast iteration — Containers start in under 3 seconds. Snapshots are instant. Development cycles are faster
- Docker in containers — Docker runs inside container servers, so you get container start times without needing a VM
- Simple workloads — If you're running a web app, worker, database, and nginx — VeloxaHost does everything you need at a lower price
Verdict
Choose VeloxaHost if: You're cost-sensitive, want fast instances, are in the US East, or want Docker in lightweight container servers.
Choose DigitalOcean if: You need managed Kubernetes, managed databases, the App Platform, virtual machines, private networking, managed load balancers, or non-US regions.
Both are solid choices for developers. The hyperscalers are overkill for most workloads — either of these will serve you far better than AWS at 5× the complexity.
