Host MinIO on VeloxaHost
MinIO is an S3-compatible object storage server: applications, backup tools and data pipelines that speak the Amazon S3 API can store files in it on your own server. It is run by developers who want an S3 endpoint for testing, backups or internal tools without a cloud storage bill.
Read this before you rely on it: the AGPL-licensed MinIO server was archived by its maintainers on 25 April 2026 and is no longer maintained. Community releases get no security updates, the community edition is distributed as source code only, and dl.min.io no longer serves community binaries. Its web console has been an object browser only since 2025; users, policies and other administration go through the mc command-line client.
Install it yourself
Install a current Go toolchain from go.dev. MinIO needs Go 1.24 or later, newer than Ubuntu 24.04's packaged Go.
GOVER=$(curl -s 'https://go.dev/VERSION?m=text' | head -1) curl -fsSL "https://go.dev/dl/${GOVER}.linux-amd64.tar.gz" | tar -C /usr/local -xzBuild the MinIO server and the
mcclient from source, as MinIO's README instructs.GOBINputs the binaries on the path.GOBIN=/usr/local/bin /usr/local/go/bin/go install github.com/minio/minio@latest GOBIN=/usr/local/bin /usr/local/go/bin/go install github.com/minio/mc@latestCreate a service user and a data directory.
useradd -r -s /usr/sbin/nologin minio-user mkdir -p /opt/minio/data && chown -R minio-user:minio-user /opt/minioWrite the settings to
/etc/default/minio. Without them MinIO starts with the well-knownminioadmin/minioadminlogin.printf 'MINIO_ROOT_USER=admin\nMINIO_ROOT_PASSWORD=%s\nMINIO_VOLUMES=/opt/minio/data\n' "$(openssl rand -hex 16)" > /etc/default/minio chmod 600 /etc/default/minioCreate a systemd service and start it.
cat > /etc/systemd/system/minio.service <<'EOF' [Unit] Description=MinIO After=network-online.target [Service] User=minio-user EnvironmentFile=/etc/default/minio ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/minio server $MINIO_VOLUMES --console-address ":9001" Restart=always [Install] WantedBy=multi-user.target EOF systemctl daemon-reload && systemctl enable --now minioConnect
mcand create a bucket. The S3 API is on port 9000 and the web object browser on port 9001.mc alias set local http://localhost:9000 admin "$(grep PASSWORD /etc/default/minio | cut -d= -f2)" mc mb local/backupsPut a TLS reverse proxy in front of port 9000 before using it over the internet, and keep port 9001 restricted to your own addresses.
FAQ
Is MinIO still maintained?
Not the community edition. The minio/minio repository was archived on 25 April 2026, and the vendor states it provides no security updates or advisories for it. The vendor now points community users to AIStor Free and AIStor Enterprise, which ship under their own licences. Weigh that before storing data you cannot afford to lose on a server that will not be patched.
What licence is MinIO under?
The community MinIO server is licensed under the GNU AGPLv3. If you modify it and let others use it over a network, the AGPL requires you to offer them your modified source. Using it unmodified as storage for your own applications does not.
Where is the web console's admin section?
In May 2025 MinIO removed the administration screens from the community console, leaving an object browser for buckets and files. Users, access keys, policies and lifecycle rules are managed with mc admin and related mc commands.
Do I need MinIO to get S3 storage on VeloxaHost?
Not always. The VeloxaHost console has its own S3-compatible buckets on plans that include them: the Grow hosting plan includes one object storage bucket, and Scale and Business include S3-compatible buckets. MinIO makes sense when you want to run and configure the S3 server yourself.
How do I back up what is stored in MinIO?
The data is ordinary files under the data directory, /opt/minio/data in the layout above. A VeloxaHost backup of the server captures it; schedule backups every 6 hours up to weekly, keep 1 to 10, and download any of them as a tarball or restore it into a new server. mc mirror can also copy buckets to another S3 endpoint.
Which VeloxaHost plan fits?
The recommended 2 vCPU, 4 GB of RAM and 80 GB of disk fit the Veloxa 2 VPS size: 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and 80 GB disk for $20 a month, billed hourly and capped at that price. Disk is what grows with use, so size it for the data you plan to store.
