Why we built it
We are developers based in Texas, on the Gulf Coast. Like a lot of teams, we ran workloads across bare metal, VPS providers and the big hyperscalers, and each option had its trade-offs:
- Hyperscalers: powerful, but complex, with bills that are hard to predict and a need for someone whose job is managing them.
- Traditional VPS: cheap and simple, but short on networking, snapshots, monitoring and an API worth using.
- PaaS: a good developer experience, but opinionated, costly at scale, and in the way as soon as you need something custom.
We wanted something with the simplicity of a VPS, the features of a cloud platform and an API developers actually want to use. So we built the tool we wanted to use ourselves. The longer version is on our blog.
How we work
We would rather tell you what is true today than what might be true later. We run one region, US East, in the Washington, DC area, and say so. Our uptime target is 99.9% a month for the control plane and API. The security page describes the controls that are in the product now, and nothing else.
