WordPress hosting with one-click install

One-click WordPress on VeloxaHost: the latest release, PHP 8.1 to 8.4, MariaDB, WP-CLI, cron, backups and automatic HTTPS, each in its own container.

Each WordPress site on VeloxaHost runs in its own container with Caddy, PHP-FPM from packages.sury.org and a MariaDB server. Pick WordPress when you create the site and it is downloaded, configured and installed for you. The control panel adds a file manager, databases, cron jobs, PHP settings and logs, and WP-CLI is installed.

Deploy from Git

Start with a one-click install

  1. In the console, open Websites and click Add Website.
  2. Enter your domain. Under Hosting type, keep Classic hosting (PHP + MySQL + control panel) and pick a PHP Version. New sites default to 8.3.
  3. Under Start With, pick WordPress and, if you like, enter the WordPress admin email. Click Create Website.
  4. Setup takes a few minutes. It downloads the latest WordPress from wordpress.org, creates a database and a database user with random passwords, writes wp-config.php and runs the WordPress installer. The admin username and password are shown once the site is created and are kept under Apps in the control panel.
  5. On the site's page, add the DNS records shown under DNS — point your domain here. HTTPS is issued once they resolve. Log in at /wp-admin/.

Work on a theme or plugin from Git

The Deploy from Git card on the site's page replaces everything in the web root, /var/www/html, with the repository. On a WordPress site that would remove WordPress itself, wp-config.php and your uploads. Use Git from the console instead, inside wp-content:

  1. On the Overview tab, under Advanced, click Open Console. It is a root shell in the site's container.

  2. Install Git and clone your theme or plugin into place:

    apt-get update && apt-get install -y git
    git clone https://github.com/you/my-theme.git /var/www/html/wp-content/themes/my-theme
    chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www/html/wp-content/themes/my-theme

  3. Activate it with WP-CLI, as the web server's user:

    runuser -u www-data -- wp --path=/var/www/html theme activate my-theme

  4. To ship a change, run git pull in that folder, then fix ownership again with the same chown command.

The Deploy from Git card, its CI Webhook and Auto-deploy suit a site whose whole web root is in a public repository, such as a static site or a plain PHP site. A WordPress site's wp-config.php holds its database password, so it does not belong in a public repository.

Supported versions

Component Version
WordPress The latest release from wordpress.org at install time
PHP 8.4, 8.3, 8.2 or 8.1, from packages.sury.org
Database MariaDB from Debian 12's packages
WP-CLI Latest build, at /usr/local/bin/wp

WordPress recommends PHP 8.3 or newer, which is the default for new sites. You can switch PHP versions later in the control panel's PHP tab, and set the memory limit, largest upload and other PHP settings there. New sites start with a 256M memory limit and a 64M upload limit.

Each PHP version is installed with these extensions: curl, gd, xml, mbstring, zip, intl, bcmath, soap, imagick, opcache and mysql.

FAQ

Where do I find the WordPress admin password?

It is shown once the site is created, and kept under Apps in the site's control panel with the database name, user and password. The console does not store it anywhere else.

Can I install WordPress in a subfolder?

Yes. In the control panel's Apps tab, enter a folder name next to WordPress before you install. The folder must be empty, and a new database is created for each install.

Does WordPress send email from my site?

Not by itself. The site container has no mail server, so password resets and notifications from PHP's mail function do not go out. Install an SMTP plugin and connect it to your mail provider.

Is my site backed up?

Once you choose a schedule. In the site's Backups section, pick every 6 or 12 hours, daily or weekly, and how many to keep (1 to 10); backups are copied off-site. You can also export any database from the Databases tab.

How do I run WP-Cron on a real schedule?

Add a cron job in the Cron jobs tab, for example every five minutes (*/5 * * * *) with the command wp cron event run --due-now. Cron jobs run as the web server's user in /var/www/html, and their output goes to the cron log in the Logs tab.

Can I use Git deploy for my theme?

Not with the Deploy from Git card: it replaces the whole web root, WordPress included. Clone your theme or plugin into wp-content from the browser console and update it with git pull, as described above.

WordPress sites run on any managed hosting plan, from Launch at $9.99/month.
