Veloxa Nano, a $4 VPS in US East near Washington, DC: 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB disk and root access, billed $0.01 an hour and never more than $4 a month.

Veloxa Nano is the smallest VeloxaHost VPS: 1 vCPU, 1 GB of RAM and 25 GB of disk, with root access, for $0.01 an hour and never more than $4 in a calendar month. It runs in US East (veloxa-us-east-1), in the Washington, DC area, which is VeloxaHost's only region today.

A Nano is a root system container: it starts in seconds, runs systemd, and can run Docker. It suits a small API, a bot, a cron worker, a monitoring tool such as Uptime Kuma, a CI runner or a staging copy of something bigger. It does not suit a database with a large working set or anything that needs more than 1 GB of memory; the next size, Veloxa 1 ($8 a month, $0.02 an hour), doubles the RAM.

Worked example bill

Two Nanos in a 31-day month: one runs a bot all month, the other is a test box used for ten days and then deleted.

Server Size Hours running Hourly rate At the hourly rate Monthly cap Billed
bot Veloxa Nano 744 $0.01 $7.44 $4 $4.00
test-box Veloxa Nano 240 $0.01 $2.40 $4 $2.40
Total $6.40

The bot reached its $4 cap in hour 400 and was not charged for the remaining 344 hours. The test box was charged for the 240 hours it existed and ran. Each server has its own cap, so two Nanos running all month cost $8.

What is included

  • Root access, and Docker and Docker Compose inside the server.
  • Browser terminal and serial console, which work even if a firewall rule blocks SSH, plus a file manager.
  • Snapshots (not charged) and scheduled backups, every 6 or 12 hours, daily or weekly, keeping 1 to 10.
  • Firewall rules per server, and live CPU and memory resizing.
  • The marketplace's one-click apps, where an app's minimum fits 1 vCPU and 1 GB.
  • No separate charge today for bandwidth.

Billing has to be active: Pay as you go is $0 a month plus the hours your servers run, with a card on file. The free trial does not cover servers with a VPS size.

Who is near US East

The region is on the US East Coast, so it is closest to users in the eastern United States and Canada. Users on the West Coast, in Europe or further away reach it over longer network paths. VeloxaHost does not publish latency figures for the region yet. The honest test is your own: create a Nano, measure from where your users are, and delete it. An hour of testing costs $0.01. The locations page explains how.

Limits

  • 1 GB of memory. Enough for a small service, not for a busy database or several Docker services at once.
  • 25 GB of disk, fixed at creation. Disk is set when the server is created, so pick a bigger size if you will need more.
  • No ports 80 and 443 on the shared address. Use a port of your block, or add a dedicated IPv4 address (a paid add-on with limited availability) to serve a domain with HTTPS on 443. IPv6 is not available in US East yet.
  • The host's kernel. It is a container, not a virtual machine: no custom kernels, kernel modules or Kubernetes. Virtual machines are not offered in US East yet.
  • One region. There is no second location for failover, and no private networks, floating IPs or load balancers in the region yet.
  • Outbound port 25 is blocked by default.

FAQ

Is the $4 a month fixed, or can it go higher?

It cannot go higher for one Nano. You pay $0.01 for each hour it runs, and once it has been charged $4 in a calendar month it is not charged again until the next month.

Is there a setup fee or a contract?

No. A Nano costs its hours. Delete it and the charges stop.

Where exactly is the server?

In the veloxa-us-east-1 region, in the Washington, DC area of the United States. It has one availability zone today, veloxa-us-east-1-a.

Can I upgrade a Nano later?

Yes. CPU and memory can be raised from the server page without a restart; a server created from a VPS size is resized by picking another size. Disk is fixed when the server is created.

Is there a free tier?

New accounts get a 14-day trial with no card required, on the Starter allowance, but servers with a VPS size, the Nano included, need active billing even during the trial.
